Want a quick taste of a few crafts?

See our local artisans in action making a variety of hand crafted items. Get “hands on” and try a few quick crafts. Take a beginners class, learn a new skill and take your creation home. Meet the artisans and find out about craft groups to join in Peterborough. Friday September 13th is a special day for retirees. Free admission, free parking on Saturday and Sunday.

Mary Marsden Class Name:  Indoor/Outdoor Mask Working with liquid Powertex is an adventure you should not miss. Although Powertex starts out a thick liquid (like mud!), after 2 weeks it will be hard and weather resistant. Before leaving the class, you will have the opportunity to dry brush on colour to bring out the movement in the piece you create, and also glue on piece of jewellery to create an accent. This mask can be hung outdoors year after year without change in the Powertex. Give it a try and have lots of fun creating!  Classes are two hours long. Two classes are being offered:


Embroiderers’ Guild of Peterborough Class Name: Gardeners Know All The Dirt Sampler Get a head start on the gardening season with this charming motto to dig by! In this class, you will learn twelve tried & true embroidery stitches, as well as gain experience in working on linen with two embroidery threads. With a complete kit including a preprinted design on linen, threads, needle and instructions, you’ll be able to add your own touches to make the piece unique to you. 3 hour class, maximum of 10 students. Teacher will supply: A kit which includes:

  • Pre-printed design on linen fabric
  • DMC embroidery threads
  • Doodle cloth for practicing stitches
  • 4” bamboo hoop
  • Embroidery Needle
  • Instruction booklet (stitch diagrams, stitch placement guide, helpful hints, etc)

Students should bring:

  • Small pair of sharp scissors
  • Pencil
  • Notebook

Kawartha Gourders Class Name:  Reed Basketry Basics Want to learn the basics of basketry? Create a small simple reed basket to hold those small loose items lying around on your counters.  This is a 2 hour course with a maximum of 5 students. Teacher will supply:

  • Circular piece of gourd to use as a base
  • Precut flat or round reed both natural and dyed
  • Decorative seagrass weavers

Students should bring:

  • Small pail to hold wet reed
  • Scissors

Sue Flanagan – Felted Bird Sue’s class will teach people how to make a lovely felted bird Sue Flanagan

Teacher will supply:

  • Foam block
  • Needle felting needles
  • Band-aids
  • Wool roving
  • Wire legs
  • Styrofoam body
  • Plus bird books for reference
  • Glue gun
  • Wire hangers

Students should bring:

  • Optional:  Bring a rock or piece of driftwood if you want your bird to be sitting.

Margaret Seaton – Fused Glass Class Students create a 4 x 6 Fused Glass Tree using various colours and type of glass as well as paint and mica powder for embellishment. Students will have a large selection of glass colours to choose from to allow for individual expression. Step by step demonstrations and hand on support will be provided. Workshops will be conducted from 2:00 – 4:00 Friday, Saturday and Sunday from Margaret Seaton’s home studio.  Completed art work will be available for pick up 3 days after the class at the Gourders Guild Office in Peterborough Square. Teacher will supply: All materials required to complete project.

Woodturned penKawartha Woodturners Guild Have you ever wanted to try working on a wood lathe? This is your opportunity to make your own wooden pen. We will have classes each day where you will be introduced to the wood lathe and the tools you will need to turn a pen. Kawartha Potters’ Guild – Hand Building Functional Pottery

The two hour hand building class will be an opportunity to learn about creating textures with tools, fabric and objects from nature. Slab and pinch pot methods will be shown to make stoneware pottery. A choice of 2 pieces will be made. Fee includes clay, firing and glazes.
Choices may include a mug, bowl, small appetizer plate,and vase. A choice of glazes will be given.
The completed pieces can be picked up at the Kawartha Potters Guild on 993 Talwood.

Teacher will supply:
Samples of bisqued and glazed pottery, clay, tools for cutting, smoothing and texturing clay, pictures/books of ideas, buckets for
clean up, rags, personal water containers, spray bottles, plastic coverings, ware boards and plastic storage containers, ribs(old credit cards), sponges, pens and file cards to record participant’s contact information when pieces are done.

Students should bring:

  • an apron or comfortable clothes
  • hand lotion(clay can dry out skin)

Wool and Wood Baskets – Christina Pridie

In this 3 hour class you will learn how to cut a T-shirt into yarn to make the small wool and wood basket. (The base is 6″.)  Then you will learn how to do the crochet knot stitch to create the fibre part of the basket.  This is an easy beginner crochet project with the look of knitting.  A great combination of mediums mixed together to create a practical and functional basket to be used for all sorts of things such as: towels, soaps, toys, magazines, craft supplies, yarn, etc.

The teacher will supply:

  • the pattern
  • prepared wooden base
  • two T-shirts, 2 crochet hooks
  • tapestry needle.  

Students should bring:

  • a pair of sharp scissors.

Mary Croxson – Cardmaking

Card MakingAre you tired of looking for the perfect card for a special occasion?  In this class you will learn how to make your own personalized cards.  Mary will guide you through the process of using printed papers, stamps, ribbons and more to make three delightful cards which will become a keepsake for that special person.
